|Profile :||After serving in the Sri Lanka Planning Service since 1979, Karunatilaka Amunugama joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 1985. Before the current assignment as Sri Lanka Ambassador to Germany and Switzerland, he served as the Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs from March 2011 to January 2014 followed by as Secretary to the Ministry of Investment Promotion from January to July 2014.
During his overseas assignment Amunugama served as the Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand from 1998 to 2001 with concurrent accreditation to Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Vietnam and as the Permanent Representative to the Economic Social Commission for the Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP): From 2001 to 2005 he was the Ambassador to Japan: And Ambassador to China from 2007 to 2011.
In the Ministry of External Affairs he has previously served as Additional Secretary/Economic Affairs, Protocol and Public Communication (2005-06) and Chief of Protocol (1996-98).
Has been the Leader/Head of delegation to the 2nd Ministerial of BIMSTEC in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1998): the 12th Governing Council Meeting of the Centre for Integrated Rural Development Asia and Pacific (CIRDAP) in Bagan, Yangoon (1999): the UNCTAD X, Bangkok, Thailand (2000); 56th ESCAP Session: 8th Bilateral Consultations between Sri Lanka and China (2012); 2nd Bilateral Consultations between Sri Lanka and Thailand (2012); Senior Officials Meeting on the Establishment of a Secretariat for ACD, Kuwait (2013) ; 2nd Political Consultations between Sri Lanka and Vietnam (2013) ; 4th Senior Officials Meeting of the Sri Lankan-South Africa Partnership Forum (2013); Political Consultations at Foreign Secretary level with the Republic of Korea (2013)

During the year 2000, he served as Chairman for the Committee of Whole 11 (Economic & Regional Cooperation) to the 56th ESCAP Session and Rapporteur to the Advisory Committee of the Permanent Representative to the 56th ESCAP Commission.
Appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (2005- 08); Board of Directors of the Reconstruction and Development Agency - RADA- (2005); and 09th Session of the Environmental Council (2007).
During 1999-2001, he held Honorary Posts in the Board of Trustees of the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok; The Advisory Council of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre, Bangkok; The Ambassadorial Group of the Advisory Committee of the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
